Uniting for a Brighter Future: The 14th Annual Nikki Rivera Back-to-School Event in the Works

It’s nearing that time of year again—Lancaster County is buzzing with anticipation as planning is underway for Rep Nikki Rivera and Rep Ismail Smith-Wade-El’s 14th Annual Back-to-School Event, one of the largest community-driven school readiness initiatives in the region serving students grades Pre-K-8th from the School District of Lancaster, Manheim Township School District, Hempfield School District and Penn Manor School District. This event, brings together nonprofit organizations, local businesses, and dedicated community members with a single shared goal: to ensure that every student enters the new school year equipped and empowered to succeed.

More than just a giveaway, this event has become a cornerstone in supporting students and families from all walks of life. By offering free school supplies, backpacks, clothing, shoes and additional resources, it acts as a great equalizer—easing financial burdens while boosting confidence and promoting educational equity.

A Snapshot of Last Year’s Impact

The numbers from 2024 tell a powerful story:

  • 2,415 students and families served
  • 360+ volunteers stepped up to make the day possible
  • Over 80 community groups partners contributed time, donations, or services

These figures not only reflect the scale of the event, but also the strength of the community standing behind our local students.

Why These Events Matter

Educational Equity Begins with Access

According to the National Retail Federation, families spend an average of $890 per child on back-to-school expenses. For many, this cost is overwhelming. Events like these ensure every student can begin the year on a level playing field—no matter their zip code or household income.

Prepared Students are More Confident and Motivated

Studies show that students who start the year with the proper supplies are more likely to attend school regularly and perform better academically. When students and families feel ready, they are more engaged and confident in their learning journey.

Communities Thrive When They Invest in Education

The U.S. Department of Education emphasizes that community engagement in education is key to student success. Events like this foster community pride, shared responsibility, and a sense of unity around a common purpose.

As President John F. Kennedy once said, “Children are the world’s most valuable resource and its best hope for the future.” By participating in or supporting this initiative, you’re helping build a future where every child has the tools to reach their full potential.

This year, there are multiple ways to support this important cause. Whether you’re interested in volunteering, donating, or becoming a partner organization, your contribution makes a meaningful difference.

"For nearly one hundred years, generations of Lancastrians have supported United Way through a workplace campaign at their employer. Giving back to help neighbors, friends and family is easy through a payroll deduction pledge and our online giving platform streamlines the process for everyone. We are so grateful for the hundreds of local businesses and organizations that conduct workplace giving campaigns each year. From small businesses to large corporations, employee gifts and corporate donations make a significant impact on tens of thousands of people who need our help."
