As staff members with PA CareerLink® Lancaster County, we see participants each and every day looking for ways to move further in their career path, or start working towards a new one. Whether it be assisting financially or offering support in their job search, the moment they come in with their new certification, or the moment they tell us about their new job, it brings us all joy. There is no greater feeling than when we are able to support these individuals in reaching their goals.
Through the Path to One Good Job partnership (a partnership with United Way of Lancaster County), which aims to help Lancaster County residents earn their first post-secondary credential, we were able to assist Blessing John in her journey of growing in the healthcare field. When she came to us, she was working as a housekeeper. She knew her dream was to work with patients and be someone that can help others. She came to CareerLink® with the plan to pursue the Practical Nursing program at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. Blessing was able to balance her work schedule, her time with her two children, and her schedule with her Career Navigator in order to complete the requirements to receive funding. With the funds from Path to One Good Job, Blessing was able to enroll in the January 2019 program. During her time in the program, she was awarded a scholarship for her high academic marks and excellent leadership skills, and was asked to participate in meetings with partners and employers connected to the LPN field.
On December 19, Blessing graduated from the LPN program. During the graduation ceremony, Blessing was asked to co-present the Florence Nightingale Lantern Ceremony. Alongside her classmate, she spoke about the meaning behind the ceremony and what it means to nurses everywhere. Blessing is now working alongside her Career Navigator to take her NCLEX and find full time employment as an LPN.
As Blessing’s Career Navigator, it has been a privilege to watch her grow and excel in her work. I was honored to attend her graduation, and to be able to share in the celebration. I look forward to seeing where her journey takes her. Once Blessing gets experience in the field, she hopes to pursue education to become a Registered Nurse.
