Patterned after United Way of America's Spirit of America Award, the Spirit of Lancaster Award is the highest tribute for community involvement – honoring exceptional commitment and investment by businesses or organizations and their employees. Honorees exemplify a caring spirit, commitment to the community and exceptional campaign results that together make a powerful, lasting impact on Lancaster County.

The 2016-2017 Honoree is: Donegal Mutual Insurance Company

Donegal Mutual Insurance Company was founded in Marietta in 1889 to provide fire insurance for local farmers. Today, the company has customers in 21 states across the East and Midwest. Owned by its policyholders, Donegal continues to focus on providing support for the communities it serves with financial and volunteer time investments in many initiatives. In 1996, the company held its first United Way campaign, raising over $8,000 from its employees. Fast forward to 2016, when employee and corporate financial support topped $73,000, enhanced by a strong volunteer team serving as the United Way planning committee and their Day of Caring volunteer contingency. Donegal's motto, "There When it Matters Most," reflects strength and security for their policyholders and speaks to their community support as well, where they continually go above and beyond. In the past few years, we've learned how competitive their employees are: during the past two United Way campaigns they have raised almost $4,000 in an annual Penny Wars competition among departments, an investment that goes into our Community Impact Fund to strengthen our work in reaching the Four Bold Goals by 2025. To Donegal's President and CEO, Don Nikolaus, to their campaign coordinator, Chuck Smith, to their United Way committee, and to the many employees who support this community with their time, talent and treasure.

Each year, United Way's Campaign Chair recognizes a company whose innovative ideas and efforts have influenced the community campaign on a county-wide basis. They go above and beyond to promote United Way and encourage participation in our annual campaign. The businesses that receive this award are star supporters of United Way and champions of our mission.

The 2016-2017 Honoree is: Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories

Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories is the largest single-site environmental laboratory in the U.S. and supports the analytical testing needs of industrial companies, consultants and government agencies. Growing to meet the needs of their clients has been a consistent theme in their more than 50-year history. As they continue to expand their business, their community support grows too. They believe it's important to be good corporate citizens and help make our community a better place to live, and they encourage their employees to get involved in the community as volunteers and to donate to worthy causes, including United Way.

Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories employees participated in various fundraising events throughout the year including: Picnic in the Parking Lot with food, games and live entertainment performed by their multi-talented staff, a parking space auction, bake sale, flower sale, restaurant fundraisers, and more - raising nearly $9,000. In addition to funds generated from these events, the employees invested generously and the company provided a corporate match for a total contribution of more than $60,000 to support United Way's work - a significant increase in support over the previous year. At Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories, supporting United Way isn't just a fall event, their team works year-round to support United Way and our community. We are so fortunate to have caring corporate citizens like Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories here in our community.

To Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories President, Neal Salerno, to their campaign coordinator, Shena Curreli, to their United Way committee, and to the many employees who support this community with their time, talent and treasure ... thank you for epitomizing what it means to Live United.

To recognize Bill Hyman for his 20 years of dedicated service as a Loaned Representative for the United Way Campaign, the Bill Hyman Campaign Volunteer of the Year Award was established in 2013 in his honor. Thanks to the support of New Holland North America, the award will continue to recognize outstanding campaign volunteers for their commitment, enthusiasm, and dedication to United Way’s mission each year.

The 2016-2017  Honoree is: Ken Harnish - Armstrong Flooring, Inc.

Ken Harnish has worked as Armstrong for 38 years and retired before the campaign started in 2011. He was brought back in a part-time role in 2014 to assist with HR duties at the Armstrong Floor Plant, including running their United Way campaign. He's had the opportunity to work closely with a committee made up of representatives from both the IAM and the USW unions, as well as salaried plant employees. In addition to running many successful campaigns, he has seen a variety of United way fundraisers at the Plant from dunk tank and carnival games 30 years ago to this past year's snow removal equipment auction, and of course the annual hot dog cookout.
