Patterned after United Way of America's Spirit of America Award, the Spirit of Lancaster Award is the highest tribute for community involvement – honoring exceptional commitment and investment by businesses or organizations and their employees. Honorees exemplify a caring spirit, commitment to the community and exceptional campaign results that together make a powerful, lasting impact on Lancaster County.

The 2014-2015 Honoree is:

Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate

The Coolest Town in America, Lititz is blessed to be the North American headquarters of Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate, where local folks have been making Wilbur Buds and other chocolate confections since 1894. Cargill’s steadfast support of the Lancaster County community through United Way is as sweet as the aroma that fills the air around its plant. United Way of Lancaster County is honored to present Cargill Cocoa & Chocolate with the 2014 Spirit of Lancaster Award.

Cargill has supported United Way for many years. Their passion for improving the community is shown in many ways… from bringing the United Way message to all of their employees at each location during the fall campaign to providing volunteer opportunities for their employees during our annual Day of Caring and holding special events year-round to remind employees of United Way’s important work. By providing a significant corporate donation, Cargill makes an even greater impact.  Over the past five years, Cargill and its employees have invested in excess of $650,000 to improve lives right here in Lancaster County. They truly LIVE UNITED by GIVING, ADVOCATING, and VOLUNTEERING.

The Campaign Coordinator of the Year award is presented to an individual or team for outstanding efforts, the use of unique or creative campaign practices to increase a company or organization's campaign results.

The 2014-2015 Honoree is:

Robert D. Dodds, Lititz Mutual Insurance

Robert Dodds is the Vice President of Legal Issues and Compliance at Lititz Mutual Insurance Company. During his 21-year history with the company, he has coordinated the United Way campaign for the past 11 years. Not only is his length of time as their  coordinator an amazing record, but Rob has had the unenviable job of continuing a 21-year run of 100% employee participation in the United Way campaign at Lititz Mutual.

Rob’s ability to engage employees is remarkable and certainly one of the reasons for his success.  His passion and enthusiasm for United Way and his ability to motivate all of the Lititz Mutual employees to invest in their community through United Way have earned Rob the 2014 Campaign Coordinator of the Year award.

Each year, Lititz Mutual Insurance Company, its leadership and staff continue to show strong support to United Way. This year was no different as their employees committed to an August Trailblazer Campaign.  By running an outstanding early campaign, Lititz Mutual Insurance Company continued to be a role model, leading the way for the rest of Lancaster County to follow.

In the 2014 campaign, Rob’s efforts led to an increase in employee and retiree giving, recording their most generous campaign to date of $31,945. The leadership of Lititz Mutual Insurance Company also matched their employee giving with a corporate contribution. All told, this community leader and its staff invest a grand total of $63,870! Because of Rob’s amazing work and the support of Lititz Mutual Insurance Group, they have received the Circle of Honor Award every year since its inauguration in 2011, a testament of truly supporting the mission of United Way.

Thank you, Rob, for your continued dedication to United Way and our community. You are a great example of what it means to LIVE UNITED.

To recognize Bill Hyman for his 20 years of dedicated service as a Loaned Representative for the United Way Campaign, the Bill Hyman Campaign Volunteer of the Year Award was established in 2013 in his honor. Thanks to the support of New Holland North America, the award will continue to recognize outstanding campaign volunteers for their commitment, enthusiasm, and dedication to United Way’s mission each year.

The 2014-2015  Honorees are:

Neil Bulich & Susan DelGiorno-Ream, Lancaster Regional Medical Center & Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center

For the past two years, Lancaster Regional Medical Center and Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center have worked together to run an effective campaign at both hospitals. Thanks to their dedication and regular communication, the Campaign Coordinators at both locations—Neil Bulich and Susan DelGiorno-Ream—have been shining examples of what it takes to LIVE UNITED.

Neil and Susan have implemented United Way of Lancaster County’s best practices to run a successful campaign, including year-round employee engagement, campaign presentations, soliciting all employees, and much more. In 2014, their efforts raised a total of $37,159, a 10% increase over the previous year.  In addition to raising more money, Neil and Susan helped to raise awareness of United Way by putting together a team for the annual Trike Race and by recruiting a Day of Caring volunteer team. Their enthusiasm and excitement showed when participating in Company Coordinator trainings, events, and receptions around United Way.

When United Way wanted to open a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) center in the Lititz area, Neil and Susan got the ball rolling, enabling us to open a new VITA site at Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center and provide free income tax preparation for residents in the Lititz area.

For all of these reasons and more, Neil and Susan are perfect examples of dedicated United Way champions! Neil and Susan, thank you for all your passion and commitment to United Way of Lancaster County.

The Outstanding Company Coordinator Awards honor individuals or teams who have demonstrated commitment, creativity, and exceptional results within their companies or organizations by implementing innovative strategies and demonstrating best practices.
