A few years ago, the members of United Way of Lancaster County's Women's Council learned that millions of dollars worth of tax refunds were going unclaimed each year, because many taxpayers didn't know they were eligible for, or didn't claim, valuable tax credits for working families. Recognizing that income is an important building block for a better life, the Women's Council pursued a program of outreach designed to educate families about the opportunities available.

United Way is now a key partner in the Lancaster Money in Your Pocket Coalition, and in the county-wide effort to advocate for the use of free tax preparation services at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites; the Earned Income Tax Credit; and other measures aimed at boosting the financial stability of Lancaster County families.
