Safety Net

Our Goal
To provide a safety net of supportive services to assist vulnerable populations through life’s challenges, and improve their quality of life.
Our Strategy
United Way of Lancaster County works to ensure that help exists for our most vulnerable citizens including survivors of domestic, family and sexual violence; victims of disaster; people with disabilities; the frail elderly; and adult caregivers*. We believe individuals should be able to access the best supportive services to assist them through life’s challenges while respecting their dignity as human beings.
We Support
· Physical, mental, social, educational and occupational services for persons with disabilities;
· Systems advocacy for persons with disabilities;
· Housing, healthcare, counseling, financial assistance & advocacy for survivors of violence;
· Emergency response, including shelter and vouchers for food, clothing and household items;
· Services for adult caregivers to reduce hardships financially, medically and mentally.
*According to the United Way 2010 Community Assessment, nearly 20% (1 in 5 Lancaster County adults) of the survey respondents reported that they serve as a caregiver for an adult with disabilities, individuals with chronic illness, and older adults. Based on this newly recognized area, the United Way of Lancaster County Safety Net Solution Council is identifying additional support services to reach this newly recognized population of vulnerable adult caregivers.
2010-11 Highlights
· Approximately 100 individuals and families affected by disaster were stabilized through case management including information and referral and financial assistance.
· Nearly 3,000 individuals and families affected by domestic, family, and sexual violence received counseling, emergency shelter, case management, and legal advocacy to help ensure their safety and work toward recovery from abuse.
· More than 4,500 adults and children with disabilities received services to address their physical, mental, social, educational, and occupational needs; improve their quality of life; and increase their independence.
